Subject: The Two Sides of Conan Doyle - Both "Rational"
This is an excellent film on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, showing the passion, enthusiasm and commitment of the great man. Also somewhat poignant as it took place only three years before his passing at the age of 71 on 7 July 1930 at Windlesham in Crowborough, where this interview took place.
Sad, but not altogether surprising, that a lot of the "conventional wisdom" about him and his commitment to Spiritualism continues to be trotted out without any substance to back it up, exemplified by the earlier reviewer who referred to "irrational spiritualism" - very easy to stick on a label and then dismiss it without any kind of comment. Did this reviewer actually LISTEN to what ACD said in the second half of this interview? - "I'm not talking about what I believe, I'm not talking about what I think, I'm talking about what I KNOW...".
I would recommend reading 'The Return of Arthur Conan Doyle' by Ivan Cooke (1956) if you want to get a deeper insight into ACD's thoughts on Spiritualism and the afterlife (and what led to the White Eagle Lodge being founded in England in 1936, six years after his physical death).

Odd how so many people will discount psychic and spiritualistic things as crackpot games then pretend that some mythic gawd is everywhere directing traffic and even write laws demanding we observe this mythical boogieman. Why Doyle should be any less credible than say any preacher is a complete mystery not only to me, but to millions of others.
if the mythical boogieman (God) can direct our lives then it should also reason that psychic boogiemen should just as well.. i dismiss both as the same basic premise..invisible, silent boogiemen.
It's fascinating, the juxtaposition of the rational Holmes with the irrational spiritualism. Houdini, who went around exposing mediums as frauds, and Doyle had many a war of words on the subject.

Thanks for posting this historic treasure.
Who is TVC and why are they claiming copyright on this newsreel footage?
It is a wonderful piece with historical value.
I don't believe I've ever seen him speak before, and it was a treat! Might want to remove the last few frames, though.
